Scientifically, piperine is classified as an alkaloid from Piper nigrum. It is found in black pepper --Â
concentrated in the peppercorns, which are the part of the pepper vine plant that is harvested for culinaryÂ
and medicinal uses. However, it is also naturally present in sources other than just black pepper,Â
although this is the most common source.
Mostly, piperine in black pepper is used as a culinary spice. However, in many parts of the world it is used widely for
therapeutic and medicinal purposes. Is there a link between piperine and weight loss? It doesn't appear it has been studied
for its effects on weight loss specifically. However, one characteristic of the best weight loss aids is that they increaseÂ
thermogenic activity, effectively boosting the body's metabolic rate. Piperine has been shown to increase thermogenicÂ
activity. So, there may be a link between piperine and weight loss, and people in some countries use it exactly for thisÂ
reason, but studies are needed to confirm whether it is effective for this purpose. What about piperine extract cancer?Â
Some studies conducted in India have shown that piperine may suppress induced lung cancer in mice. Another study also inÂ
India showed that piperine "produced a significant reduction in tumor nodule formation" with regard to induced lungÂ
metastasis in mice. So it appears that there is some initial promise with respect to piperine extract cancer....but moreÂ
extensive studies need to be conducted. Piperine and Serotonin -- serotonin is a chemical present in our brains thatÂ
enhances mood and relives pain. Piperine may enhance the production of serotonin. Besides piperine and serotonin,Â
piperine has also been shown to: help the body absorb and utilize vitamins, minerals and nutrients, such asÂ
beta-carotene (plant form of vitamin a), curcumin, selenium, pyridoxine (vitamin B6), and others. Piperine also hasÂ
anti-inflammatory properties, which may be responsible for some people claiming it alleviates pain. Additionally, it isÂ
used to reduce the severity of fevers, and stomach aches by improving digestion
